Locate the WiFi Slot on Motherboard

First, open your R36S by removing the 4 screws on the back. Look for the "WIFI" labeled area on the motherboard, located near the speaker.

The R36S-V21 board (dated 2024-12-18) has dedicated pads for internal WiFi module installation. You can see the exact location highlighted in the image.

  • Remove battery connector before working
  • Use a plastic spudger to avoid damage
  • Note the pad positions: GND, D+, D-, 3.3V

Understand the RTL8188ETV Module Pinout

Before soldering, familiarize yourself with the RTL8188ETV module pinout. The back of the module shows all connection points clearly labeled.

Pin Function
GND Ground (2 pads available)
D+ USB Data Positive
D- USB Data Negative
3.3V Power Supply
ANT Antenna (optional, for better range)
  • Pre-tin both module and motherboard pads
  • Use quality flux for clean connections
  • 30AWG wire recommended for connections

Solder and Test the Module

Carefully solder the WiFi module to the motherboard pads. After soldering, test the connection before reassembling the device.

The image shows a successfully installed RTL8188ETV module. After installation, boot the device and navigate to Settings → WiFi to verify the module is detected.

  • Double-check connections with a multimeter
  • Apply Kapton tape to insulate and secure
  • Test WiFi connection before closing the case
  • If module not detected, recheck solder joints

⚠️ Known Issues & Limitations

Audio Interference / Buzzing Sound

During data transfer, you may hear a buzzing or crackling sound from the speaker similar to an old dial-up modem. This is caused by electromagnetic interference between the WiFi module and the speaker.

  • This is normal behavior when the module is close to the speaker
  • Using a shielded cable extension can reduce the interference
  • Some users report no noise if module is soldered directly to the motherboard

OTG Port Occupied

The internal WiFi module uses the internal USB bus, which means the OTG port will be occupied by the WiFi card. You will not be able to use USB devices through the OTG port while the internal WiFi is installed.

  • Cannot use USB controllers, keyboards, or other USB devices
  • External USB WiFi dongles will not work simultaneously
  • Charging still works normally via USB-C (DC port)
🔋 Battery Impact The WiFi module consumes minimal additional power. Most users report negligible impact on battery life.

Tips & Recommendations

✓ Use quality flux and thin solder wire (0.5mm or thinner)
✓ Double-check your connections with a multimeter before powering on
✓ Apply Kapton tape to insulate and secure the module in place
✓ If you experience interference, try shielding the module with copper tape
✓ This mod requires soldering skills - practice on old electronics first if you're a beginner
